Maids who can drive in the UAE

Her usual job, plus the driving you agree. Depending on your family, that can include:

• School runs, and taking children to their activities
• Shopping and errands, such as groceries, the pharmacy or dry cleaning
• Appointments, such as taking a parent to the doctor
• Looking after the car, such as keeping it clean and reporting problems
• Her other duties, such as cleaning, cooking or childcare, around the driving

Only if you agree it. As of September 2026, MOHRE (the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation) lists drivers as an occupation of their own in its employer guide, next to housemaids and nannies, in its rules on paying salaries through the Wage Protection System (WPS). Paying a domestic worker through the Wage Protection System is mandatory for private trainers, private tutors, personal healthcare providers, personal PROs and private agricultural engineers, and optional for housemaids, nannies, cooks, drivers, housekeepers, gardeners, security guards and similar roles.

Two rules in Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, the UAE's law on domestic workers, make it worth agreeing the driving up front. A domestic worker's contract must be on MOHRE's standard form and state, among other terms, the nature and place of the work and the worker's total pay and how it is paid. An employer may not give a domestic worker a different kind of work from the contracted job unless the worker explicitly agrees and the new job is one of the listed domestic occupations.

We found no official page that says whether driving now and then counts as a different kind of work for a helper hired as a housemaid or a nanny. So agree the driving before she starts, make sure her contract reflects the job you agreed, and ask MOHRE on 600 590000 if driving will be a main part of her day.

Check both before she drives. We found no official page that sets out the licence and insurance rules for a domestic worker who drives her employer's car. Ask your car insurer whether your policy covers her, and ask the traffic authority in your emirate whether her licence lets her drive in the UAE. Keep a note of what they tell you.

A careful driver first, then the rest of the job. Choose on skills and experience, not nationality. Look for:

• Driving experience in the UAE, and how long she has driven here.
• A calm, careful manner, especially with children in the car.
• Knowledge of the roads around your home, the schools and the shops.
• Experience with the rest of the job: cleaning, cooking or childcare.
• References from families she has driven for.

Ask about her driving as carefully as her other work:

• How long has she driven, where, and in what kinds of car?
• Has she driven children to school before, and how did she keep them safe?
• Has she had any accidents or traffic fines?
• How does she plan a day with school runs, errands and housework?
• Is she comfortable driving at night or on motorways?
• Can her last family confirm the driving she did for them?

Around the school runs and her rest. Driving often happens at the edges of the day, early in the morning and after school, so plan her hours to fit. The Decree-Law sets her rest:

• A domestic worker is entitled to at least 12 hours of rest a day, of which at least 8 must be consecutive.
• A domestic worker is entitled to one paid day off a week.

Agree separately who pays for fuel, parking and tolls, and what happens if she gets a traffic fine.
