Live-out maids in the UAE

Yes, if you want privacy at home and your help can be planned into fixed hours. Families often choose a live-out maid when they have no spare room, or when they need help mainly during the working day.

If you need help early in the morning, late in the evening or at short notice, a live-in maid may suit you better, because she is already at home. If your children are the main job, compare nannies too. Whichever you choose, agree her hours in advance: she has a life, and a journey, outside your home.

The same as for any helper: live-out describes where she lives, not her visa. Sponsorship is the employer's responsibility; families can manage the visa themselves or ask MaidMatch to connect them with its visa partners.

Ask each helper what visa she holds now, and don't let her start until a work permit from MOHRE (the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation) covers the job. Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, the UAE's law on domestic workers, sets the penalty. Employing a domestic worker without a work permit for that job is punishable by a fine of AED 50,000 to AED 200,000.

We found no official page that says whether you can get a work permit for a helper whose residence her husband or a relative sponsors, so ask MOHRE on 600 590000 before she starts. For part-time or hourly help, MOHRE recognises a licensed recruitment office's Flexible package, where the office holds her visa and pays her salary. Not unless the law's exceptions allow it, even though she lives elsewhere and has time outside your home. Under the Domestic Workers Decree-Law, a domestic worker may not work for anyone other than their employer, except as its Executive Regulations or MOHRE decisions allow.

Reliability matters as much as skill when she comes in from outside. Choose on skills and experience, not nationality. MaidMatch suggests looking for:

• A reliable commute plan: ask where she will live and how she will get to your home.
• A record of punctuality that her references can confirm.
• Flexibility on shifts, if your hours change from week to week.
• Experience in similar homes, from the size of the household to the ages of the children.

Ask about her time and her travel as well as her skills:

• Where will she live, and how long will her journey to your home take?
• Which hours and days can she work, and how flexible is she if you run late?
• Which tasks did she do in her last job, and for how many people?
• Has she looked after children of your children's ages?
• Why did her last job end, and can you speak to that family?

It depends on the helper and the hours. Each helper lists her own salary range on her profile. When enough helpers match this page, it shows the median and middle range of their asking salaries, so you can compare before you contact anyone.

Talk through her travel before you agree a salary: whether you pay towards her transport, and what happens on days she can't get in. Put what you agree in writing.
